<p dir="ltr">A youth has been arrested and charged in connection to the overdose death of a 16-year-old girl in June 2024.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The victim was found unconscious in a Prince George residence by first responders late in the evening of June 26, 2024.</p>

<p dir="ltr">According to police, the girl had &ldquo;high levels of fentanyl&rdquo; in her blood and later died in hospital.</p>

<p dir="ltr"><a href="https://www.kelownanow.com/watercooler/news/news/Provincial/Teen_girl_who_overdosed_in_BC_appears_to_have_been_targeted_by_fentanyl_trafficker_RCMP">At the time</a>, the Prince George RCMP said the girl appeared to have been &ldquo;targeted by a fentanyl trafficker.&rdquo;</p>

<p dir="ltr">After a year-and-a-half investigation by the Prince George RCMP&rsquo;s Serious Crime Unit, a 17-year-old youth was arrested on Tuesday, Jan. 13.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The suspect, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was taken to court the same day and released on conditions.</p>

<p dir="ltr">&ldquo;This is a tragedy, and our thoughts continue to be with the deceased&rsquo;s family,&rdquo; said S/Sgt. Aaron Whitehouse. &ldquo;We also recognize that this event has had a larger impact on the community including the accused and their family.&rdquo;</p>

<p dir="ltr">Whitehouse encouraged parents, guardians and teachers to have &ldquo;hard conversations&rdquo; with youth about unprescribed drug use and its inherent dangers.</p>

<p dir="ltr">As the investigation is now before the courts, the RCMP will not be releasing any further updates.</p>
